Current Major Biometric Initiatives
US
TWIC is a credentialing program designed to improve security across all transportation modes for personnel requiring access to secure areas of the national transportation system. This program is currently in the Prototype Phase and will utilize a biometric to eliminate the use of fraudulent credentials.

US
The Registered Traveler is a pilot program lauched byt the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The Registered Traveler progtam's principal pbjective is the improvement of the security screening process in airports. Approved travelers will be registered biometrically in the program, and will use special lanes at airports (where their biometric information will be verified) for expedited security screening.

Canada
The RAIC program is a credentialing program for personnel requiring access to restricted areas of Canadian airports. The Identification Card will be used to verify the identity of personnel at the time of access to the restricted areas using biometric technology.

US
The US-VISIT program is designed to verrify the identity of visitors to the US requiring visas. It uses biometric technology ( fingerprint recognition) to ensure that the person entering the US is the same as the person who applied for the visa.

Independent Biometric Testing
Testing conducted by NIST on fingerprint recognition algorithms. Includes testing for small scale systems to large scale systems (1:1 to 1:Many)
Facial Recognition Vendor Test. Testing for facial recognition systems conducted by NIST. These tests are run every second year, the most recent being FRVT 2002.
The Fingerprint Vendor Competition (FVC) is run every 2 years by the Biometric Systems Lab (University of Bologna), the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Laboratory (Michigan State University) and the Biometric Test Center (San Jose State University).
Testing of different biometric technologies, including fingerprint, facial, and iris, by the Communications Electronics Security Group (CESG) of the National Physical Laboratory of England.
